Understanding Parameter Forwarding
What is Parameter Forwarding? - Parameters are key/value pairs of information that you can pass along to a website in the URL. A key is an identifier, and the value is the actual data that key refers to. Take the following URL for example: http://somesite.com/index.php?action=track&affiliate=john&id=000123. In that URL, there are three keys, "action", "affiliate", and "id". Each one of them holds a value, "track", "john", and "000123". Now when that link is visited, somesite.com knows exactly what to do. Perhaps it stores a hit in the database for the affiliate named "john" for product "00123" which he is promoting. This is just one of countless uses for parameters.
Should I use Parameter Forwarding? - Chances are No! Parameter forwarding is for advanced users only who need to pass extra information along with their Pretty Links.
But my Target URL contains Parameters in it, shouldn't I enable this feature? - Again, No! If your target URL contains parameters, then those parameters will already be passed along when someone clicks on your Pretty Link. Parameter forwarding is used only for sending extra or dynamic data to the Target URL.
How do I use Parameter Forwarding? - Let's say you are an affiliate for an online music merchant. Your affiliate link for "Song A" in that store is something like: http://somemusicstore.com/affiliates/index.php?affiliate_id=449828&product=song-a. But you also promote "Song B", "Song C", and etc. You'll notice that your affiliate link is the same all the way up to the &product=some-song parameter. Well, instead of creating a bunch of different shortened Pretty Links for all of your affiliate products. You can create a Pretty Link with a target URL of "http://somemusicstore.com/affiliates/index.php?affiliate_id=449828" and a slug of "music" with parameter forwarding enabled for that link. Your new Pretty Link will look something like http://mysite.com/music. If you want to use that pretty link to promote a specific product you will just add the parameter onto that Pretty Link like: http://mysite.com/music?product=song-b. Then when someone clicks on http://mysite.com/music?product=song-b they will be redirected to http://somemusicstore.com/affiliates/index.php?affiliate_id=449828&product=song-b.Last Updated: August 1, 2012
